I was born in 1969, 25 days shy of a new decade and in the shadow of our first moon walk. Originally my Mother and I lived in Dinkytown where Dave the Barber would give me free haircuts. Hippies with long hair were okay, apparently not the children.
In 1974 we moved to the Como neighborhood. I attended Marcy, Anderson, then South for my public education. It was good enough to get me to the University of Pennsylvania, where I graduated in the Winter of 1992.
I spent the next several years selling newspapers in Connecticut, Pittsburgh (where I met Karlene, love of my life) and Phoenix. In 2000 we picked up and moved back to Minneapolis. It was Karlene who fell in love with Northeast because it reminded her so much of Pittsburgh.
I worked at Utne magazine until they were bought by another company in Kansas. Since 2007 I've worked at Tiger Oak Publications. We publish Metro, Seattle magazine and 21 other publications. For those who want to know what I do, I'm responsible for marketing to the readers.
Anyway, I've done pretty well. You can google me. I've helped small magazines become more competitive in the retail environment, and I've spoken to large magazines about how to sell someplace other than Wal-mart.
Personally, I'm active in the local DFL, on the Board of the St. Anthony East Neighborhood Association, and on the Board of the DFL Education Foundation.
Recently, I've tried to figure out how to hit tennis balls in a straight line, and I've wondered what it might be like to write aimlessly now and again.
