Whether politics, travel, philosophy or the rhythm of the everyday, I'm interested in the progressive nature of the world and Minnesota. My name is Jeremy Wieland.
Congressman Sabo, now retired, was just at the Stone Arch Discussion Group and there's a long pod cast of a conversation with him. It's very enlightening. Click here.
I earlier posted a requiem to Alexander Solzhenitsyn. Just lucky I guess that the Washington Post printed his famous essay, Live Not By Lies since I referenced Havel’s Power of the Powerless. I think that LIve Not By Lies is something to take to heart the next time an elected official says that offshore drilling will reduce gas prices. It won’t. When next a President of the United States asks to invade a country because they have Weapons of Mass Destruction, be skeptical. And when Candidates talk tough about bombing Iran, recognize folly. Read Alex’s essay.
Today marks the passing of someone who truly lived within the truth. Alexander Solzhenitsyn died outside Moscow. He was a cataloguer of most of what was wrong with Russian totalitarianism. One pass through the Gulag Archipelago should end any pretenses of the infallibility of the majority or of government. Or as I would argue, any large organization. In honor of Alex I think we should all take a few minutes and read Thoreau's Civil Disobedience. Should do us some good.
